Chasity, the mother of two children in Independence, Iowa, knew her family needed a better place to live. She reached out to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development (RD) to talk about a mortgage.

Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity owned an old house in town that needed re-habilitated. RD partnered with the non-profit organization to help Chasity become a homeowner. As the future home buyer, she was able to make design decisions—including paint colors—throughout the house before the project even began.

“We consider every environment to be hazardous until the threat is contained,” says Chief Todd Padgett of the Cople District Volunteer Fire Department (VFD). “Air packs aren’t just used for house or structure fires. We wear them for hazmat incidents and outdoors on farms to safely operate in these areas.

The certified first response agency covers Wise and Russell counties and supports double dispatch of firefighters or police with Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for calls in Sandy Ridge, Coeburn, Copper Creek, Cleveland, Dante and Castlewood.
