Funding Will Support Rural Health Care for Mental Health and Substance Use

CARSON CITY, Nev., June 17, 2024 – U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development (USDA RD) Nevada State Director Lucas Ingvoldstad today celebrated the groundbreaking for USDA RD’s investment of $3,775,185 in the New Frontier Treatment Center (NFTC) to support the NFTC's expansion of its 28-bed residential co-occurring mental health and substance use facility. This $3.7 million investment was funded by $2,775,185 million through the Community Facilities Direct Loan Program and $1,000,000 million through the Emergency Rural Health Care Grant.

“The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to ensuring that all Nevadans, no matter where they live, have access to high-quality mental and behavioral care,” said Ingvoldstad. “This investment in the New Frontier Treatment Center, nearly doubling the Center’s patient capacity, will cut down on critical waiting times for rural Nevadans in need of mental health and substance use treatment. We’re proud of the impact this investment will have on mental health accessibility in the City of Fallon. USDA Rural Development remains dedicated to improving community health and wellness in rural Nevada.”

This Rural Development investment will be used to help the New Frontier Treatment Center expand its existing residential treatment capacity. The NFTC is a 28-bed residential co-occurring mental health and substance use treatment facility. The demand for residential treatment beds in this area is growing as more judicial (family or specialty) courts are being assigned and diverting offenders to the facility for treatment. The NFTC offers services including psychiatric, primary health, medication management, medication assisted treatment, mental health, co-occurring and substance use treatment, psychosocial rehabilitation, basic skills training, targeted case management and peer recovery support services. In any given year, 98.95% of the bed capacity is filled with a wait list for new clients. This funding will help increase NFTC's capacity from 28 to 42 beds to serve mental health and substance use patients and increase opportunity for recovery. Expected 8606 people to benefit.

The Community Facilities Direct Loan Program provides affordable funding to develop essential community facilities in rural areas. An essential community facility is defined as a facility that provides an essential service to the local community for the orderly development of the community in a primarily rural area, and does not include private, commercial or business undertakings.
