USDA Rural Development Awards $661,536 Grants to Four Farmers Under Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) Funds

Lares, Puerto Rico, February 8, 2024 – Maximiliano J. Trujillo-Ortega, USDA State Director for Puerto Rico, today announced during Puerto Rico Farm Bureau convention, in Lares, that USDA awarded four REAP grants to Farmers & Agricultural Producers in Puerto Rico.

This program provides guaranteed loan financing and grant funding to agricultural producers and rural small business for renewable energy systems or to make energy efficient equipment and new system loans for agricultural production and processing.

The Farmers & Agriculture Producer that obtained the grants funds were:

  1. BEN MALD Corp; Agriculture Producer of Corozal that obtained a grant of $390,000 to buy & install a photovoltaic system to connect to a battery energy to ensure the business can continue operation in case of a power failure.
  2. Hacienda Tres Angeles Inc. obtained a $110,240 grant to purchase and install a photovoltaic system. They are a Coffee Farming operator in Adjuntas.
  3. Sunc. Espinosa Rivera Inc. obtained a $98,334 grant to purchase & install a photovoltaic system to connect to a battery energy to ensure the business can continue operation in case of a power failure They are Agricultural producer in Hatillo.
  4. José T. Roman Barcelo, Inc, a Hydroponic Agricultural Producer in the municipality of San German, obtained a $62,962 grant to purchase & install a photovoltaic system to connect to a battery energy to ensure the business can continue operation in case of a power failure.

Trujillo indicated that USDA is making the grants available under Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). The application windows for this program are March 31, 2024, June 30, 2024 and September 30, 2024.

USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas. This assistance provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and crates jobs in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements, business development, housing, community facilities such as school, public safety and healthcare, and high-speed internet access in rural areas.
