USDA Rural Development Awards $272,000 Grants to Nine Rural Community Water Aqueducts & Announces New Eligibility Maps for Puerto Rico

Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, February 15, 2024 – Maximiliano J. Trujillo-Ortega, USDA Rural Development State Director for Puerto Rico, today announced in a Certificate Award Ceremony in the municipality of Adjuntas that USDA awarded Water Grants to six Community Water Aqueduct in Puerto Rico.

The funds will be used to buy generators, water pumps, to guarantee water quantity if loss of power occurs during emergency as occurred after hurricanes Irma, Maria, & Fiona.

The Community Aqueducts that received the grants are:

  1. Usuarios Pozo Profundo Inc., in the municipality of Caguas was awarded a grant of $53,000, this project will benefit 167 people.
  2. Comunidad Guaraguao Inc., in the municipality of Juana Diaz, was awarded a grant of $50,000,this project will benefit 238 families.
  3. Comunidad Las Cruces Incorporado, in the municipality of Naranjito, was awarded $16,000 grant, that will benefit 900 people.
  4. Comunidad Sabana Inc., in the municipality of Orocovis, was awarded a grant of $21,000 that will benefit 890 people.
  5. Quemados II Sector Vidente Inc. in the municipality of San Lorenzo was awarded a grant of $26,000, that will benefit 400 people.
  6. Asociacion Pro Acueducto Hato Cuchilla Inc., in the municipality of San Lorenzo was awarded a grant of $39,000 this project will benefit 120 families.

Trujillo-Ortega indicated today that three Community Aqueduct in the municipality of Adjuntas already received grants for generators. The entities are:

  1. Comunidad Garzas Centro Aeropuerto, Inc., received a grant of $25,000 that will benefit 120 people.
  2. Acueducto Garzas Juncos, Inc. received a grant of $20,000 that will benefit 750 people.
  3. Adjuntas Las Cruces, Inc., received a grant of $22,000 that will benefit 553 people.

The Biden-Harris administration and USDA continue its efforts to improve that quality of life of Rural Areas in Puerto Rico. State Director Trujillo-Ortega announced a redrawn of Rural Development program eligibility map for Business Programs, Community Facilities and Water and Environmental Programs.

Municipalities that were ineligible are now eligible or their Rural Areas expanded. This includes the municipalities of Ponce, Mayaguez, Caguas, Toa Baja, Trujillo Alto, Cataño, Carolina, Guaynabo and Bayamón.  Municipalities, NGOs, Farmers and Businesses in these areas can be eligible for USDA Rural Development Programs and can check eligible areas: https://ruraldevelopment.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=a58ef9de38154cf3a1a71ba0355e4811 .
