Almost 2,400 Residents to Benefit from Investment

REDFIELD, S.D., July 7, 2021 – U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) South Dakota Rural Development Acting State Director Hally Witte announced that USDA is investing $307 million to modernize rural drinking water and wastewater infrastructure in 34 states and Puerto Rico.

“Rural Development is committed to assisting our rural communities in providing safe, reliable and modern infrastructure for their residents,” Witte said. “USDA is investing in our small towns and cities that need it most – to help them build back better and stronger than ever before.”

USDA is financing the projects through the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program. This program provides funding for clean and reliable drinking water systems, sanitary sewage disposal, sanitary solid waste disposal, and storm water drainage. The program serves households and businesses in eligible rural areas with populations of 10,000 or less.

The City of Redfield will use a $776,000 loan and a $907,000 grant to provide additional funding for a water and sewer project originally funded in 2018 for $20.5 million. The project will replace or reline deficient collection lines throughout the community. These improvements will help alleviate inflow and infiltration and health and sanitary concerns caused by deficiencies in the system and will provide a cohesive sewer collection system. Redfield will also add a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to the current booster station and replace outdated distribution lines throughout the community. These improvements will create operating efficiencies and provide a reliable water distribution system. The total project cost is $22.7 million with local funds being used in conjunction with Rural Development funding to provide a unified sewer collection and water distribution for 2,333 users.

Under the Biden-Harris Administration, Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities, create jobs and improve the quality of life for millions of Americans in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community facilities such as schools, public safety and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural, Tribal and high-poverty areas.
