Cane Bay Fire Station

Whitesville Rural Volunteer Fire Department has received $3,300,000 through the USDA Community Facilities Direct Loan & Grant Program to construct the new Cane Bay Fire Station in Berkeley County's Cane Bay community. Berkeley County, known for its rapid growth, houses over 10,000 residents in Cane Bay, along with multiple educational institutions, dining venues, shopping centers, and the Cane Bay YMCA.

The establishment of the Cane Bay Fire Station reflects a significant milestone for the community, ensuring quicker emergency response times and enhancing overall public safety. Strategically positioned within the community, the Cane Bay Fire Station aims to provide prompt and efficient fire services to its residents, enhancing fire protection coverage in response to the area's expansion.

This initiative seeks to improve response times for emergency responders, benefiting the local community by centralizing administrative and training functions at the fire chief's office within the station. The new station will also feature a designated community area for public tours and computer use. Furthermore, the facility will host a Berkeley County Sheriff Office substation, further bolstering public safety measures in the area.

Fire departments nationwide receive an ISO rating that influences nearby homeowner's insurance rates. Currently, the Whitesville Rural Fire Department's ISO rating is divided, with one area rated 4 and the other 4X, while the national average stands at 5. The department anticipates a significant improvement in its ISO rating following a recent inspection, especially regarding response times to residences. This rating will save members of the community money on their homeowner’s insurance premium.

Investing in essential community infrastructure is vital in maintaining rural areas' quality of life and competitiveness. Through Community Facilities Programs, communities in rural America can access financial support for developing or upgrading essential public services and facilities, promoting economic growth and sustainability. These initiatives encompass a wide range of projects, including fire and rescue stations, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and public service centers, contributing to the overall well-being and progress of rural communities.
