It’s Never too Late - The American Dream of Homeownership

Sabrina Glenn -
Housing
Crandell-Home

John and Kathleen Crandell thought that owning their own home was just a dream. But this dream finally became a reality. This retired couple, ages 70 and 68, had always rented and lived on a fixed income from Social Security and a small pension. The idea of homeownership seemed out of reach, especially since they had never heard of USDA Rural Development or its homeownership program, which is designed to assist very low- and low-income individuals and families in financing housing at affordable rates.

When the Crandells heard about the program, they were living full-time in a travel trailer mobile home in a rented space. The living conditions were far from ideal; the home lacked adequate heating, forcing them to rely on space heaters. On the coldest days, they could only use two heaters at a time to avoid tripping the breaker in their cramped quarters. John suffered from severe allergies due to the dry and polluted location. Although uncertain about how things would go, the couple decided to apply for assistance and give it a try. Learning they were eligible filled them with excitement, and they immediately began the search for their new home.

The couple viewed many properties with their realtor before discovering a small house in Palestine, Texas. This was "the one." An offer was made, and the contract was signed without delay and the closing process proceeded swiftly. Both John and Kathleen remarked on how simple the process was. Calling into the office felt like chatting with old friends, which helped put them at ease. We visited with them shortly after closing, and as we sat over a cup of coffee, the couple expressed how amazed they were to finally own a home. The closing occurred on their 50th wedding anniversary, making it their best anniversary yet. John and Kathleen took great pride in their new home—a charming little house in a quiet neighborhood, where they could relax under their own shade tree. John experienced relief from his allergies, and the clear air and bright stars of the East Texas sky were a welcome change. The American Dream had come true for the Crandells, and they were no longer just dreaming but living the reality.
