FLEMINGTON, NJ, August 16, 2023 – Today, USDA Rural Development State Director Jane Asselta joined key stakeholders and pantry personnel to celebrate the grand opening of the Flemington Area Food Pantry Annex. The Annex received a grant from USDA in the amount of $121,600 to assist in purchasing and installing a walk-in freezer, a pallet mover, and a generator.

“We’re thrilled to be able to assist with the Annex expansion,” said Asselta. “With this financial support, we’re able to assist the Flemington Food Pantry meet their mission of providing food and personal care items to those in Hunterdon County who are food insecure. The Rural Development team here in New Jersey is proud to invest in and support our rural residents, making our collaborative efforts more efficient, more effective and allowing us to serve more people.”

The project serves about 80 seniors in two low-income senior developments located in Hampton and Flemington by providing them with food and other needed items. In addition to basic staple food items, the residents also receive fresh produce and a special dessert a volunteer makes just for them.

Following the ribbon cutting, USDA RD personnel visited a senior development residence and met with residents who benefit from these upgrades.

This investment is just one example of how the agency’s programs help support people in rural communities. This grant has been authorized under the American Rescue Plan, which provides direct relief to expedite the country’s recovery from the economic and health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, to include those facing food insecurity. These efforts showcase the government's commitment to supporting vital community initiatives.

Under the Biden-Harris Administration, Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for millions of Americans in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community facilities such as schools, public safety, and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural, high-poverty areas.
