USDA-RD Participates in in a Ribbon-Cutting Event at West Carteret Water Corporation

NEWPORT, N.C., October 12, 2021 –Various federal and state officials joined U.S. Department of Agriculture North Carolina Rural Development at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at West Carteret Water Corporation today.

USDA is investing $12.5 million to make various improvements to West Carteret’s water system.

“The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to funding clean and reliable drinking water systems for Rural America,” said Rural Development Acting State Director Mel Ellis. “These new systems assure the residents, in this beautiful piece of Rural North Carolina, will have clean drinking water for years to come.”

This project consists of:

•   Improvements to the system’s overall water storage which includes construction of a new 750-thousand-gallon elevated water storage tank to meet the systems long term water storage needs, installation of a new mixing system in the two existing elevated tanks, altitude valves added to the new tank and two existing tanks.

•   Improvements to the system’s water treatment plant which includes a 240 square foot expansion to the existing chlorine and lab room, a new 2.0 million gallons per day aerator, a new softener vessel; a new color vessel, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition improvements to implement the new components, and new generator at water treatment plant and corporate office.

•   Improvements to the system’s water supply which includes new production wells and new portable generators.

•   Expansion of the systems water distribution system which includes a new 12” water transmission main from Hwy 24 to north end of Pelletier Creek, approximately 29 miles of 2” to 8” water distribution mains, and replacement of water meters.

The project adds 404 new residential customers to the system.

USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community facilities such as schools, public safety and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural areas.
