U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Nevada has announced the agency has about $13 million in Water and Environmental Program (WEP) Direct Loan and Grant funds available in Nevada for small rural communities and tribes to build or improve water, wastewater systems, solid waste or stormwater systems.

“Effective and efficient water and wastewater systems are critical to rural economic development,” Nevada State Director Phil Cowee said. “Under the leadership of President Trump and Agriculture Secretary Perdue, USDA is committed to improving rural infrastructure, because when rural America thrives, all of America thrives.”

USDA is providing the funding through the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant program. Eligible applicants include non-profits, tribes, rural cities, towns and water districts. The funds can be used for drinking water, wastewater systems, stormwater systems or solid waste disposal systems in rural communities with 10,000 or fewer residents.

Of the funding in Nevada, $360,000 is available for Guaranteed Loans, $10.1 million is available in the form of a low-interest Direct Loan, and $2.8 million is available in grants. Interest rates are at a three-year low (between 1.375% and 2.375%) but are subject to change July 1. The term of the loans is up to 40 years. Information online available at Water Waste Disposal Grants to Alleviate Health Risks for Colonias.

In addition, nationwide there is an additional $7.3 million in 306C Grants available for tribal communities. Residents of the area to be served must face significant health risks due to a lack of access to, or use of adequate, affordable water or waste disposal.

Nevada Community Programs Director Cheryl Couch encouraged tribes and communities seeking water or wastewater project funds to act soon if interested in 2020 funding. Couch is available at (775) 443-4760 or at cheryl.couch@usda.gov . The WEP RD Apply provides additional information for applicants at https://www.rd.usda.gov/programs-services/rd-apply
