SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 9, 2020 – The Trump Administration today announced that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing nearly $700,000 to help four agricultural producers across rural Utah develop and market new value-added products.
“Today’s funding directly supports Utah’s farmers and ranchers as they innovate and find new ways to expand their product offerings. Adding value to locally-grown agriculture commodities enhances their bottom line and improves our rural economy,” said Randy Parker, Utah State Director for USDA Rural Development. “Under the leadership of President Trump and Agriculture Secretary Perdue, USDA has been working tirelessly to be a strong partner to rural Utah in building stronger and healthier communities.”
USDA is funding four projects under the Value-Added Producer Grant Program. This program helps agricultural producers enter into value-added activities related to the processing and marketing of new products. The goals are to generate new products, create and expand marketing opportunities, and increase producer income. Applicants much match 50 percent of the total project cost. Awards for this program in Utah include:
- Dog Holler Produce in Coalville is receiving $49,097 to improve the marketing of produce grown at Ranui Gardens to local restaurants. Ranui Gardens provides produce and flowers for Community Supported Agriculture members, the local farmers market, restaurants, and catering companies in nearby communities.
- Drake Family Farms, a goat dairy in West Jordan, is receiving $250,000 to diversify goat milk production. Grant funds will be used for processing and marketing to expand sales.
- Stray Arrow Ranch in Torrey is receiving $147,825 in grant to produce and market hard cider in south central Utah.
- Wall Brothers, Inc. in Payson is receiving $250,000 in grant to add variety to their apple production. The recipient will create a new marketable product to include the use of what might otherwise be considered lower-tier fruit, bringing more value to the finished product.
USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community facilities such as schools, public safety and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural areas.
