Investment to Help Access to Essential Community Services

TEMPLE, TX Oct. 27, 2020 – The Trump Administration today announced that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $172 thousand to improve essential community facilities in Terlingua, Texas. USDA is providing the funding through the Community Facilities Loan and Grant program.

“By utilizing the community facilities programs, projects like this provide citizens modern and reliable infrastructure vital to ensuring rural prosperity in Texas,” said State Director Edd Hargett. “Under the leadership of President Trump and Agriculture Secretary Perdue, USDA has been working tirelessly to be a strong partner to rural Texas in building stronger and healthier communities, because we know when rural America thrives, all of America thrives.”

Recipients can use Community Facility funding for projects to purchase, construct, and / or improve essential community facilities, purchase equipment and pay related project expenses. Examples of essential community facilities include health care facilities, public facilities, educational services, local food systems and more.

Terlingua Fire & EMS, Inc., of Brewster County will use a $172,500 grant to purchase an ambulance and replace the seven-year old ambulance with over 100,000 miles. The corporation not only provides service to the residents of Terlingua and surrounding areas in Brewster County, but also provides emergency service to the Big Bend National Park and the Big Bend Ranch State Park, serving 9,200 rural residents.

USDA Rural Development provides loans and grants to help expand economic opportunities and create jobs in rural areas. This assistance supports infrastructure improvements; business development; housing; community facilities such as schools, public safety and health care; and high-speed internet access in rural areas.
